Here at Kaya we don’t just offer the usual teaching English volunteer placements. Our projects work to increase self-sufficiency within the communities that we work in and you have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of teaching activities. From teaching computers skills to environmental education to skills training in various communities, if you have a talent to share we’ll surely have a project where you can teach it!
Unlike the developed world, which places great emphasis on the importance of education, Third World countries have to deal with an array of other urgent problems that take prominence. Other pressing issues such as a growing national debt, increased poverty, and unemployment shift the government’s focus and overshadow the importance of national literacy. This leads to schools that are chronically under-funded, understaffed and unable to provide an adequate education to their students thus illiteracy rates remain high.
Education isn’t just about reading and writing, however, it’s about making sure that we have the knowledge to survive as best we can. In some places this takes the form of teaching about the importance of hygiene and sanitation, in others education about the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS are most appropriate. Of course the literacy of children is globally a matter of utmost importance as this is key for their future chances of gaining employment but if their families do not know about the nutritional value of the food they give them or the importance of clean water then they might not live long enough to ever have the opportunity to apply for a job. This is why at Kaya our teaching projects are diverse and serve the needs of the communities we work with.
