Business Skills Training for Disadvantaged Ghanian's

  • The Project

Become a volunteer in Ghana and help to empower disadvantaged young Ghanian's by providing them with the skills they need to gain employment and lift themselves out of poverty. Because Secondary education is not free in Ghana, for many impoverished youths it is simply not an option. This project makes secondary education accessible to the poorest people in the region and focuses on teaching them the skills needed to work in business, and even go on to set up businesses of their own. The project achieves it's aims by providing students with a proven, practical, and hands-on curriculum that will give them the skills and certification required to secure employment once they graduate. There are a variety of courses offered by the project. Most of them are based around around English, computer skills, and other specific business modules but there are also practical courses such as craft making. Past graduates have gone on to have careers as typists, stenographers, private secretaries, web-designers, computer technicians, and data entry assistants, amongst many other things.

  • Why the project needs you

Like many countries all over the world Ghana's businesses are striving to develop. International businesses are now starting to invest in Ghana and this is causing an ever-increasing demand for people to think about business from an international perspective. This project requires the help of volunteers with genuine business skills that can pass on their knowledge at degree level to the budding young students. Volunteers with skills in all areas of business are required from accounting to economics to computer technicians, help is all areas is welcomed.

Working with volunteers not only provides the students with an international perspective, it also gives them the confidence to interact with foreigners, which will be vital for them if they intend to pursue a business career.

The project is based in Accra and the need for adequate secondary education here is great. The area is home to over 500,000 people and levels of education are very low because of poverty. Since the project started running in 2000 it has received over 200 students and would like to be able to increase its intake. At the moment the school is limited to the number of students it can take per year because of lack of permanent infrastructure and insufficient funds to expand it’s teaching department. Though the project is constantly fundraising to continue the work it does, this money is not constant or reliable. Through volunteering you will not only be able to provide extra support to the students but your project fees will go towards helping the Academy expand and offer it’s services to more of Ghana’s impoverished men and women.

    Project Location

Your project will be based in Accra, a bustling and modern landscape hugging the Gulf of Guinea and the largest city in Ghana. While it boasts a waterfront location, most of Accra’s action happens away from the coast line with recent developments turning this once scattered village, into an expansive low rise skyline city. Accra is at once exhausting and exhilarating with the hustle and bustle giving way to coveted areas of peace and tranquillity.
