By volunteering in India, you have the chance to give back to a number of young communities in need of educational care, support and development from volunteers. Volunteer assistance is needed within rural schools, helping to teach English and Maths, as well as in rural child care centres providing essential support for early development and working within the local snake charming community helping to develop interpersonal and language skills. With our cultural introduction week included, you will become culturally immersed in the ethos of what is means to be an Indian today, helping to put your later volunteering work into full context within this incredibly diverse and colourful country.
Arriving into Delhi, your project begins with a week-long cultural orientation staying with a local family in Jaipur and starts in style with a visit to the beautiful Amber Fort including an elephant ride to the entrance of the palace. As part of your cultural immersion into Indian life, you will be treated to a Bollywood film and get to try your hand at Henna making, Bollywood dancing, and learn all about exquisite Indian sarees. There will also be the option of visiting the Taj Mahal as an extra trip (fees will apply). Additional excursions in Rajasthan include a Tiger Safari for all 4 weeks volunteers and for 8 week volunteers, an additional Camel Safari. When you arrive at your project you will have a week of yoga classes and for those staying 8 weeks the option of cooking classes as well.
Class sizes in India tend to be full to bursting and invariably understaffed. Support is needed here to ease the burden on local staff while providing invaluable tutoring and support from a fluent English speaker. Aanganbari’s (day care centres) equally suffer from under funding, mismanagement and disorganisation and cater to pregnant women and children who are unable to receive solid care at home. Volunteers help to share the work load with local staff and bring professionalism, dedication and community awareness to these important projects. In all cases, the work you carry out drives local positivity, social development and education progress within vulnerable communities in Rajasthan.
Project Location
Rich in history and colourful culture, Rajasthan is a popular destination for volunteers as a starting base for exploring some of India’s most incredible sights and cities. Our projects in Rajasthan are based in a number of different locations within the region, including the village of Shiv, the Barmer District, the village of Lalsot in Dausa district and the town of Jhalawar. All of our project locations boast authenticity and an element of uniqueness, untouched by Western development and commercialisation. Rajasthan is a vibrant state, traditional yet contemporary, and each region has its own distinct fusion of food, music and dance.
As well as colour, festivals and celebrations, Rajasthan is also home to the Thar Desert, the dry Aravali range running from the southwest to northeast of the state, and dry climate conditions that produce minimal rainfall. Despite varying in land conditions, Rajasthan’s people and their cultures have adapted and flourished over many thousands of years, and continue to do so today. Rural Rajasthan is a bland of dynamic people and vivid colours and cultures.
