Clinical Medical Placements in Ghana

  • The Project

Our clinical volunteer project in Ghana is based in town hospitals in Accra, supporting doctors and nurses as they care for low-income patients. Due to the nature of many of the diseases there is an emphasis on preventative education in relation to family planning and sex education as well as malaria and illnesses related to dysentery. One in every 5 children die as a result of malaria, and the economic implications are devastating to the economy with the entire Ghanaian health budget used to treat malaria in 2008. Other tropical illnesses commonly treated are related to poor drinking water and diseases spread through poor sanitary conditions, such as typhoid and hepatitis. These tropical diseases can be greatly reduced through preventative and educational methods. Health care is not free in Ghana and many patients cannot afford proper diagnostic methods (such as x-rays) or medications. Join our medical project and experience first hand the difficulties faced and meet some of the amazing people trying to help make a difference.

  • Why the project needs you

As a medical volunteer there is much work to do to provide assistance to these poorest communities from cleaning instruments, recording patient data to participation in preventative health care workshops. Practical assistance is much needed as is health education of community members as this aims to reduce costs as the project spends less on medication and treatment.

    Project Location

Your project will be based in Accra, a bustling and modern landscape hugging the Gulf of Guinea and the largest city in Ghana. Accra boasts a waterfront location but most of Accra’s action happens away from the coast line. Recent developments have turned this once scattered village, into an expansive low rise skyline city. Accra is exhausting and exhilarating with the hustle and bustle giving way to coveted areas of peace and tranquillity.
