  • The Project

This volunteer project in Costa Rica involves working with rural health clinics or with a group of nurses who make house calls and provide basic medical care such as vaccinations and health education. The project is a lifeline for poor Costa Ricans who have few resources and can't afford to travel to medical centres in distant cities.

  • Why the project needs you

The rural communities surrounding San Jose have limited health care facilities, low health education and few resources to maintain healthy lifestyles. Many people living here do not have the money to pay for medical care, medication, or even the transport to the proper facilities. This is the worst population for these limitations as rural communities usually have inadequate sanitation, use unfit water from the river, and live where dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes breed. So the need for a mobile health service is great, as is the need to educate the communities in hygiene and preventative health measures.

    Project Location

Volunteers participating in this programme are located in the Atenas community, just outside the bustling city of San Jose. Atenas is a picturesque town situated in the central highlands of Costa Rica, roughly 45 minutes from San Jose. This small town is made up of many surrounding communities that base their livelihood on agricultural pursuits such as growing coffee, oranges, mangoes, and sugarcane. Costa Rican history, tradition and culture are deeply rooted here. Atenas is a clean and charming town with a laid-back atmosphere. The friendly demeanor of the locals and the surrounding beauty of the area make this an ideal location for volunteering and Spanish study.
