Volunteer abroad with Kaya in India and work on a health promotion initiative working with local villagers whose access to information about health and hygiene is at a worrying low. The communities that we work with on this project live a very simple subsistence lifestyle either raising cattle or engaging in daily labouring work. They live a hand to mouth existence and while parents are working to feed the family, children usually stay at home alone looking after younger siblings, completing household chores and tending to livestock. In the villages we work in there is no access to either electricity or running water and as a result these communities can face devastating situations if diseases spread within their villages. Volunteers are needed to work in collaboration with local staff to promote an ethos which better champions the benefits of health education to communities who until recently had no access to the promotion of good health.
With limited access to clean water or good sanitation, the communities in the villages of Udaipur are at risk of suffering from their limited knowledge of basic health and hygiene principles. As a result, the spread of disease is quick and damaging to the locals and volunteers are needed to deliver interactive awareness sessions to the locals in an effort to minimize the spread of disease and to promote good health. Community nurses are very capable but lack the manpower needed to address large groups of people effectively. Volunteers can help distribute the workload more efficiently by helping to deliver the polio vaccine to more members of the community.
Health promotion sessions are fully led by volunteers and without volunteer support, these sessions could not be delivered. Volunteers are needed to become an integral part of the community awareness initiatives helping to promote the importance of good health practices across whole communities. Volunteers work alongside our regular teaching program volunteers to deliver specific health related topics and short projects that promote a message of healthy living.
Project Location
Our projects are based in and around the City of Udaipur, which is located in the state of Rajasthan in Northern India. The city of Udaipur is a lovely land set around azure water lakes hemmed in by the lush hills of the Aravails. A vision in white drenched in romance and beauty, Udaipur is a fascinating blend of sights sounds and experience – an inspiration for the imagination of poets, painters and writers.
Known to locals as the “City of Lakes”, Udaipur has recently been dubbed the “Venice of the East” and is now considered one of the most romantic destinations in India. The exquisite lake palaces shimmer like jewels on Lake Pichhola, and are overwhelming in splendour. There are several palaces of interest around Udaipur, and these include the majestic Chittaurgarh, the mountain fortress of
Kumbhalgarh, the beautiful Jain temples of Ranakpur, Eklingli and Nathdwara and the cool retreat of Mt Abu, the likes of which will make sure that your stay in Udaipur is a memorable one.
