Media and Photography Project to Support an NGO in the Philippines

  • The Project

Volunteer in the Philippines for this grassroots NGO and help to raise awareness of the socioeconomic issues which face local Filipinos. This organisation has many established social welfare projects which act as a support line for many disadvantaged people in the local community. However, the social and economic issues present in the Philippines often go unrecognised. This media project aims to address this by documenting and highlighting the issues concerned to a more international audience. This is a great project for volunteers with a passion for photo journalism, social media, and documentary style news reporting as well as those interested in social development. Material collected and edited by volunteers will be used to populate the organisations YouTube Channel and Facebook Page as well as other relevant literature, providing volunteers with the opportunity to really get the message out there.

  • Why the project needs you

Large scale charities and non-profit organisations often have the luxury of being able to afford to fund media departments which help greatly towards the advertisement and promotion of their cause. Small grassroots organisations, however, are not fortunate enough to have the resources to fund such operations, therefore they turn to volunteers for help. This project offers a unique opportunity for you to view from the inside how an NGO operates. If you have a flair for writing and photography then you can use this to highlight the struggles faced by many Filipino’s. Whilst you are helping to raise awareness about extremely worthwhile causes, you are also getting the chance to extend your own portfolio at the same time.

    Project Location

The project is located in Tacloban City, which is about 1 hour southeast of Manila by plane. Tacloban has modern city amenities and volunteers are housed in a home-stay in a small barangay (district) with a local host family that have numerous years of experience in accommodating international volunteers. In this small barangay atmosphere you will be surrounded by friendly locals and fully immersed into the community; he you will be able to witness the true nature of what it is like to live and volunteer in the Philippines.

Outside of the local community there is still plenty to take in. The Eastern Visayas has strong history, from Spanish colonization to Japanese occupation during World War II – it's all here. Just outside of Tacloban, is the MacArthur Memorial Site, the location at which the Philippines was liberated by the American General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines.

Other than history, there is also the natural beauty of the region to take in; with sun swept beaches, towering hillsides, lakes and waterfalls to visit during your free time.

People in this region of the Philippines speak the local dialect 'Waray-Waray' but also speak the national languages of Tagalog and English. Tacloban City and the entire region of the Eastern Visayas is not a common tourist destination; offering volunteers a real chance to immerse in the one-of-a-kind 'Pinoy' culture.
