Volunteer abroad in Ghana and spend time volunteering in a wonderful Primary School in Accra. The school currently provides education for children between the ages of 5-13 years. Although the school is small, it has a vision of providing high quality education for every child who walks through their gates right from the get go. The school is lovingly looked after; each of the classrooms boasts a very traditional Ghanaian setup and is arranged around a very pretty central courtyard.
Providing basic education is a necessity in Ghana if the local children are to get ahead in a tough city where jobs prospects are low, and poverty high. While teachers at this primary school work tirelessly to provide education to the children whose parents let them attend school, dwindling numbers can be very demoralizing and tough to take on board, considering the quality of the education presented to the children. International volunteers can provide a huge support to the school, not only in providing much needed help and teaching assistance, but also in giving an incentive for parents to send their children to school as opposed to keeping them home to work. For many families, there is not a high enough incentive to send children to school when the prospects of an increased family income can be highly appealing, however the lure of a foreigner is huge amongst this particular community and will bring a great kudos to both the school and the families of those children who are attending.
Your time and efforts could make the difference between a child receiving an education and not. By volunteering with us in Ghana, you will be some of the first ever that the school has ever received, helping piece by piece, to change the school’s history for the better.
Project Location
Your project will be based in Accra, a bustling and modern landscape hugging the Gulf of Guinea and the largest city in Ghana. While it boasts a waterfront location, most of Accra’s action happens away from the coast line with recent developments turning this once scattered village, into an expansive low rise skyline city. Accra is at once exhausting and exhilarating with the hustle and bustle giving way to coveted areas of peace and tranquillity.
