Sports Coaching and Community Work in Cape Town

  • The Project

Our sports project will enable you to volunteer in South Africa in the township of Masiphumelele, which has in excess of 35,000 residents. We work with a local primary, Xhosa speaking school with over 1300 pupils and only 30 teachers. PE lessons are held in the morning, but with class sizes that can be more than 50 pupils, the teachers find it hard to coach and keep control of the class, and provide extra help for those less naturally skilled or struggling with technique. Sports lessons at the school are between 08:30 - 12:30. Each class of 40-45 pupils has 30 minutes of PE during this period. With only one sports teacher to coordinate this, volunteer support is very much welcomed.

  • Why the project needs you

By assisting the staff in their PE lessons, you can provide more attention for the children, help those that are struggling, and for those with a passion for sport, you can help with skills training, teaching rules and umpiring games.

As a volunteer with sports education at the school and on community projects, you will be bringing vital support and relief to some of South Africa's most underprivileged citizens.

    Project Location

Cape Town is considered amongst the most beautiful cities in the world, with it’s crystal blue waters resting under the shadow of the magnificent Table Mountain, with the city wrapped around it’s base. Your accommodation sits outside the main bustle of the city in the seaside suburb of Hout Bay - a short walk from the beach and an easy rise into the city. Home of the Red Bull big wave surf contest, its white sandy beaches attract sunbathers and sports enthusiast, alike. In your spare time, visit the cape peninsular where penguins dive around bathers at the beach and the more adventurous can take at trip to meet the infamous Great White Shark. With trips to the wine regions for those preferring to stay on dry land, there is always much to do here.
