Sports Development with Rural Schools in Swaziland

  • The Project

Become a sports coach and volunteer in Swaziland. Coach disadvantaged children to play football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, netball and more. Volunteer to develop sports talent and sporting opportunities for all.

The focus of the Sports Development Project in Swaziland is to improve the well-being of disadvantaged children and young adults within rural Swazi communities, through sport. As a volunteer you will help to organize sporting activities and coaching for a few main sports - football (soccer), volleyball, swimming, tennis and netball and will engage boys and girls from the age of 7 to 25. You may also coach table tennis, golf, squash, mountain biking and rugby, depending on your skills and the needs at the time. The aim is to encourage the youth of the area to participate in some activities with other children outside of school, building their confidence and geting some exercise!

  • Why the project needs you

Many children in Swaziland cannot afford to go to school and with the high unemployment rate (50%), young adults may be tempted through boredom and desperation to engage in criminal activities. Sport can add purpose and meaning to the lives of disadvantaged people keeping them stimulated, focused, fit and healthy.

There are a few primary schools and day care centers in the area as well, and the volunteers are encouraged to get the children from these care points involved in sports development. Sports days are very popular events for the children at the schools and day care centers - volunteers are encouraged to organize these fun filled events that bring much joy to the children.

    Project Location

Our Sports Development Project is based in the heart of the traditional capital of Swaziland, Lobamba and operates from here through to Manzini, which is Swaziland’s biggest town. Lobamba is surrounded by symbolic national monuments such as the Houses of Parliament, Ludzidzini Royal Residence, the National Church, the National Museum, the late King Sobhuza ll memorial and the national stadium, Somhlolo. The Lobamba National Primary School’s Sports field is the base for the project here.
