  • The Project

Working in tandem with our Sustainable Home Building Project in Belize, volunteers are needed to provide education and care to preschool children within the Cayo District. Local primary schools usually have overcrowded classrooms which limit a lead teacher's ability to instruct students effectively. Volunteers assist with general administrative tasks, correcting school work, preparing materials, small group instruction, and other tasks as assigned, allowing the lead teacher to spend more time on lesson preparation and instruction. Getting real-world teaching experience in a developing country environment will be an eye-opening and exciting experience.

As Kaya projects work to rebuild homes for these incredible and resistant children, we need volunteer help to teach, tutor and provide childcare for the displaced youngsters as they are temporarily housed with members of the community.

  • Why the project needs you

Education is fundamental, but due to overcrowded classrooms, teachers are not always able to provide for the specific needs of each student. Students needing additional or specialized instruction often go without. Moreover, special programs in the arts and technology must be sacrificed due to lack of supplies and staff. Volunteers will provide much- needed assistance and foster a positive learning experience for the children of the Cayo District as a teacher’s aide. Within the current situation, there will also be a need for volunteers to work with children outside the classroom to provide tutoring and childcare for a number of displaced youngsters.

    Project Location

Kaya's programmes are based in San Ignacio and the surrounding communities. San Ignacio, referred to locally as Cayo, is located 2 hours from Belize City along the Western Highway and is a tourist centre. The town and the surrounding communities contain a diverse mix of creole, Maya and mestizo populations. San Ignacio is also an attractive market town set among pleasant tropical hills. The friendly people of San Ignacio enable rich cultural exchanges and productive development projects.
