Volunteer in Zambia on a project working with 6 community schools in the local area where large class numbers and just a small number of teachers means that children struggle and are unable to get help. The schools want to be able to help more, but without funding cannot bring in additional staff. A teaching assistant can provide individual attention where necessary. There are also many areas within the community where volunteer support is required and you will get involved in a wide range of activities in the community including adult literacy and some group manual work painting and refurbishing areas. During school holidays volunteers teaching time in the schools will be replaced with teaching and extra curricular activities at holiday clubs for the students. If you would like to teach in one of the schools as during your time as a volunteer please refer to the "Project Facts" section to check when the school holidays are.
Teaching volunteers spend their time providing much needed assistance within the community schools of Livingstone. While the teacher stands at the front of the class leading the lessons, it is extremely valuable to have a teaching assistant who can go around and help individual children with their assignments. Since classes are usually very large, the pupils do not often get this individual attention, so any extra attention they receive is highly appreciated. In the holidays and after school it is the volunteer work that can provide additional help in regards to extra education and other community initiatives.
