Work in an Orphanage in the Philippines

Work orphanage volunteer Asia Philippines children
  • The Project

Be part of this project in the Philippines that provides love and care to the orphans and abandoned children in the orphanage. In this developing country, thousands of impoverished children grow up in orphanages, most of which are understaffed and have few resources. Your role is to provide essential caregiving, nurturing, teaching and mentoring to kids who are growing up without much adult interaction. On the island of Leyte, based around its capital city of Tacloban, are various orphanages whose children are often emotionally or developmentally delayed because of little adult interaction. Often, the only source of their basic emotional security is from volunteers who provide affection, spend time with the children and improve their social, physical and emotional development.

  • Why the project needs you

The orphanages care for 45-100 children and quite simply don’t have enough staff to meet all the children's needs beyond basic food, shelter, and sanitary living conditions. The staff are often too stretched to spend time interacting with the children. Whilst they are fed and cleaned, babies can be left alone in a crib without much attention or interaction, missing the attention they require to learn to walk, talk, develop motor and social skills, and learn to read and count. Your time spent in one of these orphanages will be invaluable to the lives of each of these children.

    Project Location

The placement is located on the island of Leyte, about an hour by air southeast of Manila. The Leyte capital city, Tacloban, has modern amenities. Volunteers live in Tacloban with a family in a homestay within a barangay, or local community. In this small village atmosphere you will be surrounded by friendly locals and immersed in community activities. Tacloban is a historic World War II site, the beachfront city where the American General Douglas MacArthur liberated the Philippines in 1944 from Japan. It has a population of over 300,000 and the local dialect is called Waray-Waray, though English is widely spoken. Tacloban City is not typically a tourist destination and gives foreign volunteers a real chance to immerse in the one-of-a-kind Filipino culture.
