New Ruling Requires One Third Of Delhi Police Force Be Women

The government in India has approved a ruling, which reserves one-third of police posts to be taken up by women in an action to address the levels of sexual and physical violence against women. It is the latest of steps taken to strengthen laws, including stricter punishment for rape and other sexual crimes, which discourage all forms of violence against women.

The government said this new ruling “will also instil confidence among women to enable them to approach the police without hesitation for seeking protection and assistance as and when required.”

Addressing the gender imbalance within the police force will hopefully remove existing barriers, which will lead to a more effective implementation protection of women.
