  • Human Rights & NGO Management Internship in Morocco
Project Summary

What is this Human Rights & NGO Management Internship in Morocco all about?

Over the course of the years, Morocco became a destination for Sub-Saharan African and MENA region migrants. Indeed, the migrants have been escaping political unrest, civil wars and economic downturns trying to get to Europe’s most popular cities. However, many of them were forced to stay in Morocco due to fear of being caught by the Moroccan or Spanish authorities which would result in deportation to their home countries. That said, the project supports migrants and refugees navigate across the cultural bridges they may encounter by staying in Morocco. The NGO we work with promote their integration within the Moroccan society by providing them with education, professional training and social assistance. The services provided vary and are suited to them depending on their situation and needs. If the migrants have children, the NGO also has a daycare centre on the ground so that the parents can attend workshops while their child is being taken care of.
That said, the NGO has the capacity to welcome interns in many areas and allocate you depending on your skills, experience, and interests.

Why choose this Human Rights & NGO Management Internship programme in Morocco?

This internship is suitable for anyone with an interest in international development, social justice, human rights, migration issues and overall not-for-profit management in an emerging country. This can be a good placement for someone looking to acquire a solid experience abroad with a reputable NGO. Please speak to a placement advisor if this project interests you in any way, as they will be able to tell you more and confirm if your interest fits with the NGOs mission.

You may also want to add Arabic or French language lessons while on your placement for an additional fee. Please speak to your placement advisor for more information and to pre-arranged these courses in advance.

Role of the Business and Community Intern

This internship focuses around the concepts of social justice and human rights relating to the migration crisis in Morocco. Depending on your interest, background and skill sets, you will be able to help in a variety of capacity including the communication department, project management, project implementation, event planning, organising and/or teaching workshops (ie – Adult Classes for English, Children Classes for French, Design, Computer Science, Music, Dance, etc), amongst others. You may also be asked to be in contact with the beneficiaries on the ground, support them through their journey and provide a social aspect to their experience at the NGO.

What skills do I need to be a Human Rights & Management Intern?

If you want to work on the administrative side of this project, the knowledge of French is required. Otherwise, for field work, you will be able to get by with no French if English is your only spoken language.

The Location

Where will I work in Morocco?

About the Location

The NGO is located in Rabat, a 30-minute taxi ride from where you will be staying. Rabat is the administrative capital of Morocco and therefore a host of many NGOs including the one you will be interning at. Rabat is full of hidden gems from beautifully decorated mosaic fountains to delicious street foods. It has magnificent administrative buildings with blends of modern and ancient architectural trends.

Accommodation

You will be staying in a recently renovated traditional Riad in the heart of Rabat’s medina. The Riad is conveniently located within minutes of restaurants, cafés and shopping areas. Including the famous Rue des Consuls which is well known for the artisans and artifacts. The Riad hosts other interns and volunteers with whom you will be sharing your breakfast and dinner prepared by the local cook. You will also be able to enjoy westernised bathroom and toilets and be in a simple but comfortable and conveniently located accommodation.

If you desire to be immersed a little more in Moroccan culture and wish to stay with a local host family, please speak to your placement advisor as this could be an option as well.

What to do in your spare time

Rabat offers many points of interest like the Kasbah des Oudaias palace and Hassan Tower to visit during your spare time. The medina is a recognised UNESCO site, and we recommend that you take in the beauty of the old architecture and the craftsmanship that has gone into it. Rabat is conveniently located making it easy to explore the rest of Morocco. Through group led day trips or weekend trips to the Sahara Desert, Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech and many other local spots.
