What is the Journalism Internship in Rural Thailand all about?

This journalism internship was established to fill in a gap that the local community newspapers have, which is being able to publish English written articles that are beneficial and valuable to the local community. This is a mutually benefiting project, as the internship provides the opportunity for interns to write their own English articles for local Thai newspapers. You will be asked to write about either local events, or recent newsworthy items relevant to the local community. This is a great internship to practice your writing and reporting skills, while learning about a new culture. You will spend your first week of the internship learning about Thai culture and customs as well as Thai language. This initiation week will help you understand about the local culture, including the do’s and don’ts which will be helpful once you are ready to write your articles.

The first week is dedicated at learning the Thai culture to avoid any “faux-pas” once you will be writing your articles. This is a great internship to complement your field of study, gain some practical on-the-job- training skills and increase your knowledge about Thailand and newsworthy items. This unique international working experience will enable you to utilise your theoretical knowledge and training, previously gained in the classroom.

You will be working directly with an English-speaking local with an established background in journalism. The coordinator will guide, supervise and assess you. Moreover, the coordinator will help out with the language barriers that may exist among local partners.

Role of the Journalist Intern

The internship consists of working a minimum of 25 hours a week spread over 4 to 5 days depending on your university’s requirement, or your own ambitions. From time to time, and depending on what you need to write articles about, you will be asked to work on weekends.

Your role will require you to write articles and report on local community developments, or local events.

What skills do I need to be a Journalist intern?

In order to be considered for this internship, we ask that you have an established background in an affiliated field of study. You will be asked to provide a copy of your C.V./resume as your proof of qualifications. An advanced level of English is also required to be able to write the articles. Finally, you will be asked to provide your own laptop.
