This Study Abroad and Service is the perfect way to accumulate credits towards your degree while being located in one of the most important historic city in South America, once capital of the Inca Empire. As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Inca royal residence of Machu Picchu, this is the perfect place to spend your summer while studying and giving back to society.
You will spend your first five weeks studying in English or Spanish (depending on your selection) while participating in some site visits as part of your class or on the weekend.
After your studies are completed, you will volunteer for an additional 2 weeks or more while immersing yourself even more in the local communities to help make a difference.
During your Study Abroad and Service, you will be living with a homestay family immersing you even more into Peruvian culture and customs.

You will be taking courses at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and immerse yourself into Peruvian culture, and after your courses are complete, you will also be able to give something back to the local community through your volunteering efforts. Which Classes Can I take?
You will take 2 courses on this Summer Study Abroad and Service in Peru program. The courses (depending on what you choose) include a variety of field trips such as local sites, governmental institutions, exhibitions, local educational establishments amongst many others. This will be a great way to gain hands-on experience, practical knowledge in the classrooms as well as personalized tutorship with your professors.
The course available in the Health and Nutrition Track are listed below:
- Healing and Shamanism in the Andean and Amazonian Culture (3 credits)
- Andean Nutrition (3 credits)
You may also choose to have a Spanish Course accompanied with one of the classes listed above. A class of Spanish Language is worth 4 credits depending on your level of Spanish. You will be placed according to the results of your Spanish Placement Test (see more information under skills required).
After your courses, you will be able to stay in the community for an additional 2 weeks or more if you wish to volunteer. Some of the volunteering may include helping construct greenhouses to improve the diet of local families, or assist in delivering health workshops to the community alongside local nurses. Kaya placement advisor will work with you to identify the best volunteer opportunity depending on your skills and interests.

The requirements to join the Summer Study Abroad and Service in Peru program are:

Shall you decide to take any Spanish classes, upon arrival, you will be required to take a Spanish placement test to be evaluated and placed according to one of the four categories: Beginner, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate or Advanced.
Intermediate Spanish is needed for topical classes.
Cusco is situated in the heart of the Andes. It is a very rich city historically with a lot of heritage from the Inca Empire. Cusco today is a melting pot of cultures and a rich cosmopolitan environment.
The most impressive natural setting surrounds Cusco. It is located between the Andean mountain, close by the Amazonian rainforest, famous for its amazing variety of plant and animal species.

- Duration: 7+ weeks
- Cost: Study and Service: $4350* for 7 weeks with homestays (meals included)

- Requirements: Age 18+
- Location: Cusco, peru
- Working hours: Take two courses (up to 8 US credits) at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola Option to make one of the classes a Spanish Language Class
- Project availability: Dates: 2 start dates available in 2020 – 18th of May (deadline early April) – 30th of June (deadline end of May)
