Building Volunteer Projects
You can help communities construct, repair and refurbish homes, schools and facilities on one of Kaya’s project. Our building volunteer projects work with existing initiatives that employ local labour, resources and techniques and this approach ensures that your work forms a part of sustainable, longer-term development.
As a building volunteer your role will be to help local teams push forward their work. Some building volunteer projects focus on post disaster recovery work while others are in communities where repairing and redecorating buildings makes life much easier. You will be taught what to do and materials will be provided in all our destinations – don’t be surprised if some of the tools are more basic than you would expect to use at home!
Millions of people around the world live and study in buildings that are unsafe, unhealthy or uninspiring. Many children study outside, or in classrooms that are dark and dingy with nothing to motivate them to learn. Some families live in poor unhealthy dwellings, often with smoke filled kitchens. Important community spaces become run down from use and are essential facilities where childcare groups, community meetings and health visits are set. A few weeks of your time can help to address some of these problems.
Building volunteer projects that you can join include helping with the building schools and gardening in Swaziland and building homes for orphans leaving the state care system in Belize. For those of you interested in helping to transform homes and community spaces our kitchens project in Peru and our beautification projects in India are perfect for you
You don’t have to have specific skills in construction or refurbishment but those with building trade experience are most welcome. A willingness to get stuck in, a reasonable level of fitness and enjoyment of working as part of a team are all that are required for you to become a building volunteer.
Join us on one of our building volunteer projects and relieve the burden on the local teams and transform the living, social and learning environments of communities.
