Working with local project staff in Cape Town

At Kaya we value working with local projects and staff in country, as it ensures that income goes to the communities and that our volunteer and interns have access to invaluable local knowledge and experience. Local project team members understand the needs for the projects, the concerns facing the local communities and are able to assist with planning and running activities that are appropriate in the local cultural context.

Thulani is one such project assistant on our community projects for volunteers staying in Observatory in Cape Town. He builds a great rapport with everyone, and is able to facilitate the relationship between local staff and volunteers on the teaching and sports projects. Thulani can put into context many of the issues facing young people in South Africa, translates where it is needed, and provides an invaluable insight into different situations that may not be clear to volunteers.

In addition to his role on the projects, Thulani runs a half-day excursion to Khayelitsha, Cape Town’s biggest township which is also open to our film and photography interns and our tourism interns. Not only does he have first-hand experience of this area, he is extremely knowledge about its history. If you would like to see first-hand how working with local staff enhances the volunteer experience join our team in Observatory on our sports or teaching volunteer placements or our two internships in Cape Town.
