  • Public Health Internship in Zambia
Project Summary

What is this Public Health Internship in Zambia all about?

Quality healthcare in Zambia often depends on locations, educations, gender and income. The disparities to quality healthcare are often anchored from generation to generation as the norm. Zambia is classified as a lower middle-income country with its gender inequality index ranking very low. Zambia’s health sector is facing many challenges such as a shortage of trained staff and an increased workload with the HIV epidemic. Family planning services, education for girls and women unemployment are amongst the reasons of Zambia’s high fertility rate. The internship was designed to assist in the different steps being taken to improve public health locally. This includes promoting healthy lifestyles, implementing educational programs, conducting research on healthcare disparities, promoting healthcare equity, quality and accessibility, building information package, breaking boundaries with mental health, looking at gender and age issues, amongst others.

Why choose this Public Health Internship programme in Zambia?

This internship will allow you to explore public health issues in an African context. You will be exposed to various professionals that work in various clinics and NGOs in the local villages. You will have the opportunity to advance your leadership skills and interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment.

Role of the Healthcare Intern

The internship is clearly divided up in 4 weeks of learning where you will:

Week 1 – be provided with the foundation needed to hit the ground running, by learning about the context, partaking in knowledge-sharing and be introduced to the local clinic, and receiving training in data-capture and analysis.

Week 2 – be taught how to run workshops effectively while gaining an understanding of the community and its challenges. You will be supported by the team on real practical service work and be given some time to reflect on your progress.

Week 3 – be growing your knowledge and confidence, as well as get exposure to various influential people in the field locally.

Week 4 – be given the opportunity to fly “solo” by doing research, ensuring the delivery of workshops, sit on a variety of talks within the community and work in the home-based care system.

What skills do I need to be a Public Health Intern in Zambia?

Working knowledge of computers is essential including some experience with word and excel. Fluent level of English is also necessary as you will be working in the public health field. You do not need to be native, but have a good command of the language with the ability to read, speak, write and understand it easily. If you are studying public health or looking to get in the field, this is a perfect placement for you. Positivity, flexibility and passion are a must as you will be working in a challenging environment.
