Project Summary

What is the Psychology Internship in Jamaica all about?

This Psychology Internship in Jamaica is a fantastic opportunity for anyone studying or working in the field of psychology, to gain valuable practical experience. The health care system in Jamaica, although developed, is lacking in sufficient resources to meet the needs of those in marginalized communities, many of whom are suffering from mental health problems.

You will be placed in a community clinic, assisting with the delivery of a variety of treatment options. The internship is a great way to develop practical skills, complimenting your theory learning in a new and exciting environment. The work is community-driven, meaning that the work you will be doing as an intern will always be shaped by the needs of the community.

Why choose this Psychology Internship placement in Jamaica?

  • Learn about the health issues in a different country.
  • Get hands-on experience, working under the close supervision of experienced professionals.
  • Enjoy the warmth of the Jamaican people, and the natural beauty of the country.

Role of the Psychology Intern

During the Psychology Internship in Jamaica, participants will be placed at a center offering counseling and therapy services. As an intern, you will interact with patients of all ages, focussing on issues such as low self-esteem, self-expression, lack of identity and personal development.

Some of the activities you will be doing include:
1:1 sessions
Conducting group sessions
Substance abuse counseling
Monitoring medication
Outdoor activities and excursions with young people, such as playing group games, going to the park, the cinema or a field trip.
Conducting life skills and confidence building sessions

Your skills, experience and qualifications will dictate which activities you are involved in.

What skills do I need to be a Psychology Intern?

This psychology internship in Jamaica is suitable for medical or psychology students or graduates. Those already working within the field are also welcome. The internship can be tailored to your specific interests, provided they align with the needs of the clinic. As this internship involves working with vulnerable young people, all interns will be assessed for their suitability. You will be asked to submit a resume / CV alongside your application and you will have to go through an interview to ensure the best possible match. You will also be required to supply us with a criminal background certificate.

Travel during COVID times

The health and safety of our travelers and our local communities remain central to our plans for reopening countries and projects. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been adapting our programs and protocols to protect all those involved, and ask for everyone’s patience and collaboration as new rules are implemented in-country. For all projects, new standards of sanitation, procedures and social behaviors are in place, including new health and hygiene protocols and social distancing practices. You can read more here. Each location may be slightly different in the way they operate. We encourage you to inquire to your placement advisor to learn more about your specific project as you plan for your responsible return to travel!
