- Photography Internship in South Africa
What is the Photography Internship in South Africa all about?
Passionate photographer eager to make a difference? Apply for our nonprofit photography workshop in South Africa! This unique internship offers you the opportunity to develop and refine your photography skills whilst documenting the impactful work of grassroots organisations. You will receive personalised coaching by a professional humanitarian photographer, who will introduce you to nonprofit photography and support you every step of the way.
This program is a rare opportunity to explore the potential of humanitarian photography, challenge yourself as a visual storyteller, and experience South Africa in a meaningful way.
Why choose this Photography Internship?
Nonprofit organizations in South Africa work tirelessly to address the significant socio-economic challenges, such as poverty, limited access to education and healthcare and gender inequality, but they often lack resources to amplify their impact. Through this internship, you’ll help grassroots organizations by providing high-quality images they can use for communication and fundraising campaigns. Powerful visuals can effectively tell their stories, connecting them with potential donors and supporters to make a lasting difference.
During your internship you’ll be staying in Stellenbosch; a charming town near Cape Town in the picturesque Western Cape. Here, you’ll visit grassroots nonprofits addressing critical issues such as education, poverty, gender equality, and environmental conservation. Your role as a photographer will be to help these organizations build a powerful visual library to amplify their messages and attract support.
Role of the Photography Intern
As an intern, you’ll participate in both theoretical workshops and hands-on photoshoots led by an established humanitarian photographer. These sessions will enhance your technical photography skills and deepen your understanding of nonprofit visual storytelling. You’ll learn how to create culturally sensitive and impactful images that NGOs can use to share their mission effectively.
You will be given assignments which will involve understanding an organization’s mission and activities, before capturing their work with your camera. About half of your time will be spent shooting, and the other half will focus on post-production. A selection of your edited images will be donated to the organization, helping them strengthen their campaigns and drive meaningful change.
What skills do I need to be a Photography Intern in South Africa?
You need to have basic technical camera skills, familiarity with editing software, a good camera, and some photography experience. You do not need to be a seasoned professional and we will adapt your projects to your photography level. You must have a passion for photography and using it for positive change. You must bring your own DSLR or mirrorless camera. We also advise bringing a range of lenses (although this is not a requirement).
If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply!
