What is this Marine Big 5 Volunteer program all about?
Volunteer in South Africa at a Marine Conservation and Education project and make a difference in the world around you. Help to create awareness about eco-tourism, conservation, community, research and education surrounding marine life. Experience the beautiful Gansbaai, home to some of the Marine Big 5, including bronze whaler sharks (copper sharks), broadnose sevengill and visiting great white sharks, African penguins, Cape Fur Seals, Orcas, bottlenose and endangered humpback dolphins.
The main aim of the project is to discover and understand this marine ecosystem and protect it while educating the communities involved. The project involves the research and conservation of the surrounding sharks, their eggs, the African Penguins and other marine animals, through underwater video systems and marking and recapturing them.

Role of the Marine Big 5 Volunteer
As a volunteer you may be involved in the following activities:
- Assisting with beach cleanups and data capturing.
- Joining educational talks.
- Helping to clean and assist with feeding.
- Collecting shark eggs.
- Assistance in capturing conservational data on board of the vessels.
- Working with local students and communities about environmental education.
The project needs vary from time to time and volunteers’ tasks and activities will change accordingly, giving you the opportunity to gain insight into several aspects of marine conservation and data collection.
What skills do I need to be a Marine Big 5 Volunteer?
This program is open to any volunteers with an interest in marine research, conservation and outreach. You do not need any scientific or work experience. Whatever your background or profession, if you love marine wildlife and want to experience working with some of Southern Africa’s most incredible species, this is the program for you.

About the Location
The project is based in Gansbaai known for the great white sharks and home to the internationally recognized Marine Big 5. Gansbaai is a truly unique location with its wide variety of incredible animal species – including Great White and Bronze Whaler sharks, Southern Right, Humpback and Bryde’s whales, Common, Humpback, Bottlenose and Orca dolphins, Cape Fur seals and the African Penguin.
What to do in your spare time
Excursions are optional and during no sea days we will get to explore local places, enjoying South African experiences. Trips may include Cape Agulhas, Danger Point Lighthouse, Wine Tasting, Klipgat Caves, Zip Lining, Quad Biking, Horse Riding, Visit to Panthera Africa, Stony Point Penguin Colony, Hiking and Kelp Diving. Excursion costs are not included in the program cost.
