In this 2-week internship program you will be a part of a group of like minded interns who take part in a learning week followed by a practical experience week.
Week 1: Under expert guidance, participants of the group will engage in a rich array of activities including seminars, workshops, field excursions, and group discussions, all aimed at deepening understanding and fostering critical thinking in the realm of sustainability. Whether you’re studying environmental studies, business management, or international development, this immersive experience promises invaluable insights and hands-on learning.
Week 2: Expect to visit diverse sites with your new group such as conservation areas, organic farms, and eco-friendly businesses, gaining practical exposure to real-world sustainability initiatives. What will you be doing during the 2-week sustainable development micro-internship?
Below you will find a daily program itinerary. Keep in mind that some changes may be necessary due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, but it gives you a general idea of what you can expect in this exciting program:
Internship Week 1: The Academic Experience
- Day 1 (16 June): Arrival & welcome dinner
- Day 2: Introduction to Costa Rica: Transfer to Turrialba Volcano with a visit to a cheese farm and lecture on the dark side of sustainability in Costa Rica.
- Day 3: Sustainability in the government: Speakers in the morning and workshop in the afternoon on Leadership and Conflict Resolution. Night walking tour in the Botanical Garden.
- Day 4: Sustainability in the private sector: Speakers and panel discussion in the morning and workshop in the afternoon on Adaptability for Innovation.
- Day 5: Sustainability in the third sector: Speakers in the morning and workshop in the afternoon on Emotional Intelligence and Feedback.
- Day 6: Putting Sustainability in Action: Interactive workshops in the morning followed by a field visit to a Sustainable Farm.
- Day 7: Adventure Day: Full day whitewater rafting at Pacuare River.
Internship Week 2: The Practical Field Experience
- Day 8: Turrialba to Tirimbina Biological Reserve
- Day 9: Immersive forest experience. Walking tour through the Reserve’s trails in the morning, followed by a workshop about the site’s conservation model.
- Day 10: Project problem identification. Collaboration, brainstorming, and discussion sessions.
- Day 11: Final project planning and presentation delivery.
- Day 12: Tirimbina to San José, walking tour in San José, and farewell dinner.
- Day 13: (28 June) Departure

Where will the micro-internship take place in Costa Rica?
Transitioning to the second week, you’ll journey to Tirimbina Nature Reserve, spanning 345 hectares (852 acres) of lush tropical forest housing diverse ecosystems. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in lessons of sustainability, fostering a harmonious balance between land preservation, scientific exploration, environmental education, and eco-tourism. Engaging in hands-on conservation activities such as biodiversity surveys, data gathering, and educational initiatives will be part of your experience. Again, accommodation arrangements involve sharing a room with another participant.

- Any costs for vaccines or COVID-19 PCR tests (if required at time of travel)
