Project Summary

What is the Volunteering for teenagers in Costa Rica all about?

If you are looking to spend your holidays doing something different and help others through volunteering overseas, why not join Kaya on one of our education projects in Costa Rica. If you are 15, 16 or 17 years old, you can join local staff and older volunteers to work in pre-schools, primary schools and childcare centres, and help provide essential support to teachers and early years practitioners.

Bring your enthusiasm and willingness to support local communities in Costa Rica, whilst improving your Spanish skills and immersing yourself in a different culture.

Why choose this Volunteering project for teenagers in Costa Rica?

Volunteering for teenagers in Costa Rica offers you, as a young person, the ability to share your enthusiasm and energy to support the local children of Atenas. Extra pairs of hands are always needed in the schools and education centres, which are often understaffed and lacking in sufficient resources. If you want to develop your Spanish, this is also a great way to put your language skills into practice with your homestay family, the project beneficiaries and staff. You will also take up to six hours of Spanish lessons a week, to consolidate your learning.

This is a great way to improve your CV/resume, as you begin to apply for jobs, internships or university placements. With this cultural exchange program, you will certainly stand out from the crowd!

Role of the Education volunteer

As an education volunteer you will assist with a range of tasks to support the local staff. There are three volunteer sites: childcare centres, pre-school centres and elementary schools. You will help create fun games for the children to play, supervise children during playtime and break times, assist with lesson preparation, and help ensure that each child feels supported and cared for. Regardless of where you are placed, you will find that the children are very enthusiastic and keen to learn new things. In exchange, you will improve your communication and language skills, and build your confidence in an unfamiliar and exciting environment. You may even discover a passion and talent for teaching!

What skills do I need to be a Teen volunteer in Costa Rica?

A basic level of Spanish (Basic User Level A1 of CEFR) is required as you will be living with a local homestay family. This level will also enable you to build relationships with the project staff and beneficiaries. Spanish lessons will be arranged alongside your placement to improve confidence and increase the benefit of from your time here. You should have a positive attitude, a willingness to help out and an interest in working with other people.  All volunteers will be asked to attend a telephone interview and obtain parental consent forms for acceptance onto the projects.
