What is the Colobus Monkey Conservation Project in Kenya all about?
Volunteer in Kenya and help protect the endangered black and white colobus monkeys!
Assist local conservationists with their research and support of a stunning primate. You’ll work with a conservation center that promotes efforts to preserve both colobus monkeys and the ecosystems that house them.
Why choose this colobus monkey conservation volunteering project in Kenya?
Due to habitat loss and the lasting impacts of agriculture and infrastructure expansion, black and white colobus monkeys have been under threat for years. The conservation center aims to combat these threats through reforestation and community-led initiatives that promote the wellbeing of local primates and improve their relationship with nearby people. Volunteers help out with both hands-on conservation tasks and educational efforts within the area.
Role of the colobus monkey conservation volunteer
As a volunteer, you will get the chance to contribute to research, reforestation, and human-primate conflict mitigation. Your exact tasks will be assigned based on availability, your experience level, and the needs of the project at the time of your arrival.
Research: Volunteers help monitor colobus monkeys and record data on numbers, behavior, habitat use, etc. This data is essential for keeping track of primate trends and spotting red flags early.
Reforestation: You won’t just be helping the monkeys; you’ll also be protecting their homes! Volunteers support tree planting, habitat restoration, and other efforts that preserve fragmented patches of forest in the area.
Relationships: Volunteers assist with initiatives designed to improve the ways in which colobus monkeys and humans interact. This might include monitoring primate road crossings and supporting the maintenance of bridges designed specifically for primate usage.
What skills do I need to be a wildlife conservation volunteer?
No experience is required to be a colobus monkey conservation volunteer! All volunteers should be flexible, positive, and willing to work as part of a team. Qualifications or experience in the field of education, environmental sciences, or conservation work are considered and may allow you to have a higher level of involvement within different placements. Volunteers with no specific skills relevant to the volunteering project will receive training for the required work. You may be asked to provide a CV/resume as part of the application process.

Where will I work in Kenya?
About the Location
Diani is a coastal town in the southern part of Kenya. Encompassed by beaches and patches of forest, it’s home to many primates, including the black and white colobus monkey.
Kenya takes conservation very seriously. With 65 national parks, 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites, hundreds of unique species and an economy reliant on tourism, it has introduced wildlife conservation to the public school curriculum.
Accommodation
During your stay, you’ll be housed in either a locally run guesthouse or volunteer accommodation conveniently located near the Colobus Conservation center. Rooms are shared and furnished, with easy access to nearby beaches, as well as many project activities.
What to do in your spare time
During the weekends, staff can help you plan additional activities and may have specific recommendations based on the time of year in which you travel. Many volunteers like to spend time relaxing on nearby beaches, exploring local markets and cafes, and hiking some of the many trails and nature paths that run in and around Diani.
