- Marine Science Internship in South Africa
What is the Marine Science Internship in South Africa about?
Join a dedicated and passionate, international award winning group of researchers, conservationists and marine biologists conducting impactful research in Gansbaai with some of Southern Africa’s most incredible species, the Marine Big 5: sharks, whales, dolphins, seals and penguins.
This internship offers academic and field-based skills training modules for marine or natural science undergraduates and recent graduates and is certified since 2008 by the Fair Trade Tourism body.
As an intern your ecological studies will be complemented by the utilization of the technology and best practices in the field of marine conservation. On the weekends you can assist marine biologists onboard some commercial boats, gather data and ID photos and help out at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary.
Why choose this Scientific Marine Internship In South Africa?
First, you should choose this internship because you are passionate about the creatures of the sea, big and small. Your internship will give you access to one of the biggest breeding grounds for the African penguin and the Southern Right Whales and the opportunity to encounter various dolphin species, including the endangered Humpback Dolphin. All this under the watchful eye of the Great White Shark and Orcas (Killer Whales). You can gain practical research experience whilst working alongside leading marine biologists and researchers who`s mission is to translate knowledge into evidence-based conservation initiatives. This internship offers academic and practical training, increasing your data analysis and scientific research skills as you participate in one of the several multinational, multi-university research projects.
Learn and experience first hand what it takes to make a difference in an overarching marine project while gaining practical skills to boost your resumé/CV.
Role of the Scientific Skills Based Marine Intern
Your exact internship role will depend on the goals of the various research projects at the time of your arrival, as well as on the season, so it is best to talk to your advisor on what to expect, but here is a list of possible tasks you may be involved in:
- Attending lectures about marine-science and statistical topics.
- Learning about Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUV).
- Tagging local shark species.
- Collecting necropsy data where possible.
- Assisting with handling and feeding times at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary.
- Creating photographic identification.
- Helping with environmental conservation.
- Assisting biologists with their data collection onboard.
What skills do I need to be a Scientific Skills Based Marine Intern?
The scientific skills based marine internship is designed for marine science undergraduates and recent graduates within the natural science, or biology fields looking to specialize or gain further experience in the field. It is a pre-requisite to have some education in the fields mentioned above.
