Julia’s India Experience

Julia M.
Volunteer Name:Julia M.
Project Attended:Child Development Volunteering
Country Attended:India
Volunteer Bio:I am from New York and I am 22 years old. I am taking a gap year before going to grad school for a PhD in psychology for clinical children's development.
What was your greatest achievement? When the kids understood connecting the naming of colors to actually seeing them. It was great to see them get it and their faces light up when they understood English.
Did you feel you made a difference? I definitely feel like our group as a whole made a difference in the kids lives. We were able to bring in skills that we all had from our childhood and share how we learned English with them.
What advice would you give future participants? It was a great experience and I think everyone should do it alone so that you are able to make the most of it and meet a lot of new volunteers. Everyone is kind and open to bonding quickly.
What was your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was both the driving because it is so opposite of America and the food. I have never experienced so many different kinds of flavors in one meal, but it was very good.
Please tell others why you think they should sign up for a program with Kaya I think the Goa program was absolutely amazing because you get to work with the kids in the morning and then you have the rest of the day to yourself and the beach is right there so it feels like vacation at the same time.

“I absolutely loved working with the children. They were so cute and teaching them English classes through songs was a lot of fun. It did not even feel like work or something that I needed to do everyday. It was something I looked forward to everyday.”
