Grant-Assisted Programmes for Summer 2025

Welcome to ARU’s Ecuador Programmes, in collaboration with Kaya Responsible Travel.

Anglia Ruskin University is delighted to have been awarded grant funding to support students travelling abroad to Ecuador on a 4-week work and community engagement programme, in summer 2025

PROGRAM OPTIONS

Students can choose from 3 programme options

Amazonian Wildlife Rescue & Conservation

Work at a wildlife rescue sanctuary in the Amazon rainforest, where you’ll care for animals rescued from trafficking and domestic situations while supporting vital habitat conservation efforts.

Amazonian Ancestral Medicine & Midwifery

Live with the members of an indigenous women’s group in the Amazon, and support their initiatives to preserve and strengthen their cultural heritage, focusing on ancestral medicine, nutrition, and midwifery.

Permaculture, Edible Forests and Eco-restoration in the Ecuadorian Cloud Forest

Join a cloud forest reserve in Ecuador dedicated to land restoration through sustainable farming practices. Contribute to efforts that address climate change, enhance food security, protect biodiversity, and promote responsible agricultural methods.

Program Dates

Students have the option to apply for placements in one of the following 4 blocks:

  • Friday, May 9 – Thursday, June 5, 2025
  • Friday, June 6 – Thursday, July 3, 2025
  • Friday, July 4 – Thursday, July 31, 2025
  • Friday, August 1 – Thursday, August 28, 2025

 

About Kaya Responsible Travel

ARU are working in partnership with Kaya Responsible Travel.

Kaya are a responsible educational travel organisation that specialise in providing meaningful and ethical international experiences for individuals and groups.

Our mission is to promote sustainable social, environmental and economic development, empower communities and cultivate educated, compassionate global citizens through responsible travel. We do this by offering a wide range of academic and community engagement programs in varying environments across 28 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and are proud winners of multiple awards for ethical community engagement practices.

Program Costs

Costs: £1750 per person

Inclusions:
  • 27 nights accommodation in Ecuador
  • 3 meals a day – Total 80 meals as follows: B-27, L-26, D-27
  • Local on-site project supervisor.
  • On-site support available 24/7 in case of emergency.
  • Transfers to/from airport and project site
  • Welcome Orientation and Health and Safety Overview.
  • Excursion and entrance fees for Quito’s historical centre tour
Not included:
  • Flights
  • Travel medical insurance (provided through ARU)
  • Any recommended and/or required vaccinations and medicines
  • Visas (not required for UK Citizens staying less than 180 days)
  • Police background checks (for medical program only)
  • Personal expenses, such as snacks, souvenirs, meals outside of itinerary, laundry, free time activities/fees, transportation outside of itinerary, or baggage fees

Application Criteria

ARU aims to offer this opportunity to a broad range of students and especially those from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in international mobility such as students from widening participation backgrounds. We encourage students studying related subjects, however, this is not a requirement and application evaluation is not based on your grades or background experience! We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to take part in this exciting programme.

Application process

  • Begin by applying to ARU’s grant program which provides financial support for students participating in these programs. Find out in less than a week how much money you can claim to support your journey.
  • Complete the Program application form below – A Kaya advisor will be in touch to arrange a call to discuss the program you have applied for before your application is submitted for approval.
  • Administrators will evaluate all applications to select successful applicants on a rolling basis, so we encourage early application.
  • Once successful candidates have been notified, a £250 confirmation fee will be required within the following 2 weeks to confirm the placement.
  • As part of this program, students will be expected to complete some exercises with Kaya and GO, such as pre-departure assignments, including online attendance at a pre-departure workshop, sign documents and other items.
  • Students will be required to book their own flights to Quito International Airport in line with our arrival dates.
  • Students will be required to sign up for ARU’s travel insurance for their trip.
