Gender Studies Internships

As an intern in Gender Studies, you can work within organizations and initiatives focussed on women’s empowerment, gender inequality and LGBT+ rights.

Kaya’s women’s empowerment internships work with programs focused on the needs of women and girls within their communities.

Women and girls around the world are often vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, or unfavourable treatment in their cultures. Many also have children to care for, which makes their situation even more challenging. Our gender empowerment internships allow you to work on projects with different approaches to improving individual situations and working towards future change.

You can join organizations providing a safe space for women to seek shelter, providing opportunities for them to build self-esteem, develop skills and develop better futures for themselves and their families through livelihood and education initiatives.

You can participate in activities such as skills-based workshops, health education, counselling, childcare, and skills development, as well as work with the boys and men in the community who advocate for and are allies in the movement for gender equality.

At a systematic level, you may also get involved with initiatives looking at issues in gender politics within the culture, the law or the systems that operate in each location. Research, advocacy and policy development initiatives also provide great opportunities to understand the issues and push forward change.

You may also choose to work with issues related to LGBTQ+ rights. The legal situation for those in the LGBTQ+ community around the world varies greatly, with many working to improve understanding and recognition for the community, and some still remaining closed to this conversation. In locations where we can work safely within the legal boundaries, you can join organizations that work directly with the LGBTQ+ community at all levels.
