Bring your energy and love of children to volunteer as an early years teaching assistant in rural Thailand and help support local teachers and communities. Supporting the local Government of Kut Chang Sub District, the project is located in a mountainous and rural area and includes diverse populations of ethnic Thais, Hmong, Lahu, Lisu and Karen peoples. As development levels vary between villages, the government struggles to provide healthcare, education and other services. Thus, volunteers are needed to support sustainable development initiatives. The government recognises that international and national volunteers can help support underfunded schools and overstretched teachers by providing extra assistance, not only in the classroom, but also with after school activities.
Why choose this project?
Volunteering is a two way process. Not only does the volunteer benefit from gaining skills and experience to add to their CV/resume, having an amazing experience and learning more about a different culture, the community in which they work benefits from sharing skills, practicing their English and having support for their endeavours. This placement benefits the local community because teachers often have large class sizes and lack resources, so an extra pair of hands to help prepare for class and support the children when they are learning something new, is much appreciated.
Role of the volunteer
A teaching assistant volunteer will be kept very busy as small children are very energetic and demanding. Although the children take a nap during the day, you will spend time preparing activities, tidying up and supporting the local teacher. Activities for early years include: story telling, games, child-focused sports, arts and crafts and fine motor skill development. Come ready to get involved! Thai children are incredibly sweet and will willingly welcome you into their classroom. Bring along some games, stories and activities and your enjoyment will be complete.
Volunteers must love working with children, be creative and full of enthusiasm. Flexibility and cultural sensitivity are very important as you will be working alongside local Thai staff and living with a homestay family. Any volunteers with experience working or looking after children will be most welcome. You will be asked to submit a full CV/resume and attend a telephone interview before being accepted onto this placement.
