Sports volunteer Projects
Our projects are based at schools, community and childcare centres and work with young children, youths, teachers and sports coaches, where resources and skills are in short supply. You will have a fantastic time running games, explaining and documenting the rules, and helping to run and develop coaching sessions in sports such as football, basketball, athletics and many more. You may be asked to run community education session explaining the benefits of sports and impact of exercise on development and well-being.
In many countries the importance of sports and exercise is undervalued and considered to be less important than traditional subjects such as Maths and English. Coaches and resources are also often in short supply. Sports activities help develop team working, communication and listening skills as well as providing structured activities, a distraction from the lure of petty crime. Being part of a team helps with well-being, and gives a sense of achievement which is a priority in underprivileged communities where daily life can be difficult. Sports and exercise really do have an important role to play.
Projects seeking volunteers with an in interest in sports and exercise include sports development in Zambia and Sports coaching in South Africa, and both are perfect for our under 18s volunteers, as well as older volunteers. Female participation in sports, in particular football is at the heart of our sports project in Bolivia.
You don’t need to be a professional to volunteer on a sports project, you just need to be enthusiastic about sports and exercise, have a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to work well with others. Of course, if you do have coaching experience then your knowledge and expertise will be most welcome! You should be a good communicator and have a genuine interest in working with young people to make this a truly rewarding and impactful placement for you and the local community.
