- Teacher & Curriculum Development Volunteering in Cambodia
What is the Teacher & Curriculum Development in Cambodia project all about?
Use your expertise and experience in education and become a volunteer and work on a teacher and curriculum development placement in Cambodia’s premier tourist destination, Siem Reap. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in Siem Reap and it’s surrounding communities. The primary focus of these teaching placements is to help improve students English-speaking abilities to prepare them for roles in the tourism and sub industries. We work with a variety of worthwhile teaching projects including teaching in schools, daycare centres, community centres for former street children, a school for blind children, residential centres, teaching child landmine victims, and even in a centre for trainee primary school teachers.
The quality of teaching varies in Cambodia as does the experience of the teachers. A range of approaches have been adopted and therefore there is not one set curriculum is in place. English is essential to enable local people to access jobs and to help many in their escape from poverty.
Why choose this Teacher & Curriculum Development project?
The Cambodian education system is chronically underfunded and class sizes often reach up to 60 students to one teacher. With this student to teacher ratio, it is impossible for teachers to teach effectively and many students fall behind, which often leads to them eventually dropping out of school early with no formal qualifications. Even if students do graduate from school, their level of English speaking is normally still very low.
Native speaking teachers are essential as they support the existing teachers and projects. Through observing and supporting teachers in the classroom volunteers can help develop the capacity of Cambodia’s teachers. By reviewing and developing curriculum you can also leave an improved programme in place on your return home.
Role of the Teaching Volunteer in Cambodia
As a volunteer, your role will vary according to which teaching placement you are working on. For many of our teaching placements, you will be helping support teachers who are providing additional after school classes for children, although you may also be based in regular schools.
We have teaching placements working with a variety of ages from nursery/kindergarten, primary/ elementary, secondary/high school, and also 18+ as well. If you have a particular preference, we can usually cater to this for you. You may be placed at the teacher training college so that students have an opportunity to work with a native English speaker before commencing work.
You will be sent the details of your assigned placement 2 – 4 weeks prior to your arrival in Cambodia. It is not possible to send placement details earlier than this as the needs of placements can often change and also because most of the placements can accept a maximum of 2 volunteers so it depends on the availability at the time.
What skills do I need to be a Teaching Volunteer in Cambodia?
This is a placement that requires teaching skills and experience. We are therefore looking for volunteers with either a teaching degree or TEFL qualification plus classroom experience.
As we work with a number of different placements, we like to conduct telephone interviews with volunteers to find out their skills and what they are looking for. That way we can make sure you are placed in the most appropriate placement for you. You will be asked to send your CV/resume before being accepted onto this project. You will also be asked to send a letter of motivation, medical certificate and 2 references from a former teacher or employer.
WHY JOIN THE PROJECT

Where will I work in Cambodia?
About the Location
Siem Reap is a landlocked province located in the north of Cambodia and it is where all our volunteers will be staying whilst on their projects. It is Cambodia’s most visited city thanks to its close proximity to the Angkor Wat Temple.
Translated, “Siem Reap” literally means “Siam Defeated”, which serves as a reminder of the extensive conflict between the Siamese and the Khmer. This conflict is echoed in the presence of the Siem Reap Museum and Landmine Museum, so be sure to pay these a visit.
There are many celebrations held by Khmer people, whether it is to celebrate life, death, or marriage with loud music, family members and friends. Locals will even throw a party to celebrate a home renovation! During your time in Cambodia, you might be invited to these events by the locals which is a great way to experience a new culture and make new friends.
Accommodation
Throughout your volunteering experience, you will be staying in a local guesthouse within Siem Reap. Your accommodation is just off the main airport road and has close access to all the facilities the city has to offer. If you love your own company then you will be please to know that you will have a room to yourself, complete with an ensuite and a fan. Having said this, if you would like to share a room with a friend or family member then we will be happy to arrange that for you. You can also bring your iPad or laptop away with you, as there is WIFI access in the dining room of the guesthouse. You can even go for a swim (for a small fee) in the nearby guesthouse which will be perfect in the warm weather.
What to do in your Spare Time
Although Cambodia welcomes many tourists, you can still experience authentic Cambodian lifestyle in Siem Reap. Your bicycle is a great way to explore the back streets of the city or to reach a barrai (a lake) where you can hang out with locals and volunteers from your project. Tonle Sap is the huge freshwater lake which provides a plentiful supply of fish to the numerous restaurants found in this busy city.
Siem Reap has many visitors each year who travel to see the temples in the Angkor Wat complex. The volunteer guesthouse is located around 5 km from this UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there will be opportunities to visit the temples during your stay.
There are plenty of markets in Siem Reap where you can discover a bargain or two from stalls selling a variety of jewelries, clothing, and artwork. Remember to be fair when negotiating a price for an item, but be wise about how much you spend.
Kulen Mountain National Park is another destination not to be missed. Spend a day relaxing in the picnic area with your friends and taking a swim in the lake by the waterfall. Kulen Mountain National Park is where you will find the Thousand Lingas, at Kbal Spean, that represent the Hindu deity Shiva. We also recommend that you take a visit to Preah Ang Thom Pagoda to see the giant reclining Buddha. For those looking for something a little more light hearted, you could visit the butterfly museum, go horse riding whilst watching the sunset or treat yourself to afternoon tea with your friends.
