- Classroom & Child Care Assistant Volunteer Program in Cambodia
What is the Classroom & Child Care Assistant Placements in Siem Reap, Cambodia project all about?
Read about all our Christmas and Winter break programmes here.
Become a resource for local teachers and have a rewarding experience in Cambodia’s premier tourist destination on our Classroom and Child Care Assistant Placements in Siem Reap. We work with a wide range of worthwhile teaching and child care initiatives in Siem Reap and it’s surrounding communities. The primary focus of these teaching assistant placements is to help improve students English- speaking abilities and to bring fun and creativity to a rather dry curriculum.
There are many NGOs providing activities for younger children, which enable parents to go out and earn a living. Children in Cambodia don’t start school until they are five years old and many have little access to creative activities or toys before that. Your participation to create activities are essential in enabling children to develop through play. By supporting the local lead teacher, you can help manage large groups of children as well as provide more one-on-one attention. Teachers follow a range of lesson plans and curriculum, but often need help with pronunciation, games, activities and stories to enrich the lessons and engage the children.
Why choose this Classroom & Child Care Assistant project?
The Cambodian education system is chronically underfunded and child care provision is in short supply. Child care assistants bring ideas and enthusiasm to the classroom, which is invaluable to the system and the children
As Siem Reap relies on tourism and hospitality industries, learning English is very important. Many NGOs offer children from impoverished backgrounds the opportunity to learn English, which would otherwise not be available to them. Native English speakers are needed to model pronunciation and to develop interesting activities and lessons.
Role of the Teaching & Community Volunteer
On our Classroom and Child Care Assistant Placement, your role very much depends on the needs of the placement. You could be helping in a kindergarten class- reading stories in English or teaching the children new songs- or, you could be helping to prepare resources, or, even, designing a mural to improve the learning environment.
You will support the existing staff in the classroom and share your ideas with them, so that lessons and activities continue once you have returned home.
You will be sent the details of your assigned placement 2 – 4 weeks prior to your arrival in Cambodia. It is not possible to send placement details earlier than this, as the needs of placements often change and most of the placements can only accept a maximum of 2 volunteers.
What skills do I need to be a Teaching Volunteer in Siem Reap, Cambodia?
As a child care and teaching assistant volunteer, you must enjoy spending time with young children as well as embody patience and enthusiasm. Volunteers with creative ideas and a caring personality are needed. Though, while on the project, you must respect the local teacher’s approach to education.
Because we work with a number of different placements in the area, we like to conduct telephone interviews with volunteers to find out their skills and what they are looking for. This way, we can make sure you are placed in the appropriate placement for your needs.
You will be asked to send your CV/resume before being accepted onto this project. You will also be asked to send a letter of motivation, medical certificate and two references from a former teacher or employer.

Where will I work in Cambodia?
About the Location
With Siem Reap in close proximity to the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple, it is Cambodia’s most visited city and it is where all our volunteer projects are all based.
“Siem Reap” translates as “Siam Defeated”, which refers back to the centuries-old conflict between the Siamese and the Khmer. Despite this age-old conflict, Khmer people are very friendly and love to celebrate many occasions, whether it is life, death or marriage, throughout the entire year. Even home renovations are an occasion to be celebrated with music, family and friends. It’s not uncommon to be invited to events with loud music being played throughout the day and night, so be sure to join in if you want to experience what life is like in Cambodia.
To greet one and other in Cambodia, locals press their palms together and bow slightly which is known as ‘Sompeah’. Be sure to greet the locals in this way if you want to have a taste of Cambodian culture.
Accommodation
Whilst working on the project, volunteers will reside in a local guesthouse in Siem Reap with very close access to all the facilities the city has to offer. You will have a standard room to yourself, complete with an ensuite and a fan. If you would like to share a room with a family member or friend, then please let us know so we can make the necessary arrangements. Inside the guesthouse, there is a large dining room with WIFI access, so you can use your iPad or laptop should you choose to bring them with you. There is also a nearby guesthouse with a pool where you can swim for a small fee – a great idea in the hot weather!
What to do in your Spare Time
It’s still easy to get a feel for authentic Cambodian life in Siem Reap, despite the hoards of tourists. Hire a bicycle and explore the back streets or head to a lake (known as a barrai) with the locals and other volunteers from your project. You could even go to Khmer Beer Gardens with your new friends from your project for a great day out. If you don’t mind taking a 6 hours bus ride, you could visit Phnom Penh or take a 3 hour ride to Battambong to explore the caves or take the unique bamboo train.
Siem Reap gains thousands of visitors every year who visit the temples in the Angkor Wat complex. Since the guesthouse is located only 5 km from the temple – which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – there are plenty of opportunities to visit.
There are also several markets in Siem Reap where you can find a great bargain from a range of trinkets, t-shirts, or paintings to name a few. Remember to always look for the best price, but remember to be fair.
Another destination not to be missed is Kulen Mountain National Park. You and your friends from the project can spend a day relaxing in the picnic area and taking a dip by the waterfall. Kulen Mountain National Park is also home to the Thousand Lingas which represent the Hindu deity Shiva at Kbal Spean. You can also visit Preah Ang Thom pagoda where you will come across the giant reclining Buddha.
