Clinical Medical Volunteer Projects
With clinical placements available for volunteers, interns and students including those in the final year of their studies seeking an elective, we have many great options for you to choose from. You will be able to shadow local doctors, nurses and other local healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics, assisting with duties such as dealing with patient files, counting pills, cleaning implements and the treatment areas. For those of you studying medicine or nursing you many assist with basic tasks under the supervision of a local healthcare professional in line with your own training and qualifications. Qualified professionals will be asked to share their experience and knowledge with local teams, in a capacity building role. You will all gain first-hand experience of how healthcare teams adapt and cope when working with high patient numbers in low resource settings or where patients cannot be treated locally.
Working as a clinical medical volunteer in a clinical setting is important for medical and nursing students and professionals as global health becomes more of a local issue. Patients and healthcare staff originate from countries where culture, language and illnesses vary. By gaining experience of how professionals in different countries communicate with patients, their families and each other, you can apply your learning to your own healthcare setting and educate your colleagues. Local teams benefit from extra help and also learn about techniques and best practice in other countries in topics such as health and safety and treatment techniques.
Placements offering clinical volunteering through Kaya include Work in a Public Hospital in Nepal, Medical Assistance Projects in India and laboratory placements in Ghana. We also offer a medical internship in Thailand and Ecuador and we have a Medical Elective/Rotation/Internship in Belize if you are a student in your 4th year of medical studies.
If you want to join us as a healthcare volunteer because you are starting a career in medicine, want to consolidate your studies or are a qualified professional, you are an ideal participant for our projects. You will be asked to submit your CV/resume, copies of your training and medical qualifications and attend a telephone interview to prepare and match you to the right project. You should be willing to help where needed in line with your skills and experience, have good listening skills and be a good communicator. Qualified medical professionals may be asked to register with the local medical council.
