What is a Remote Internship?

And what can remote internships do for you? First of all, internships are used as a stepping stone and career booster for students and young professionals. And remote internships are no different, except for the obvious: they’re held online.

Remote Internships

With the world going virtual in the wake of COVID-19, many schools and businesses are bringing work and learning online. To keep up with these changes, it is even more important for you to push your career into the direction of change and learn effective virtual work methods.

In a well structured virtual internship, you should be able to take away the following:

  • A demonstration of the style of work in your field of interest
  • Expectations and guidance while working remotely
  • Supervisor mentorship
  • Advancement in many soft skills, such as teamwork, organization, time management and more
  • Advancement of a specific project from start to finish

Why Go Remote?

As we become more interconnected online, virtual internships can allow you to access opportunities that might not otherwise be available. Having a part-time internship option that can be done from home makes this career step much more attainable.

With this new platform, remote internships are much more accessible, and offer:

  • Flexible timing if you have a job, a family, or school
  • Accessibility if you are differently-abled
  • No transportation requirements
  • Reduced expenses

Why a Remote Internship Abroad?

By adding an international component to an internship, there are even more opportunities for employable skills. You will be working with a variety of cultures, work styles, and languages that will add interest and look great on your resume! Just compare “Marketing Internship” vs. “Marketing Internship with Ecuadorian Company.” Already that tells your future employer so much about your ability to adjust, adapt and collaborate!

It’s important to remember that just like a regular internship, you should trust the company you are working for and make sure you have the support needed throughout your internship! Although you may be working in your house and physically surrounded by a familiar environment, remember that you will be working with a very different culture, and encountering some language barriers and time differences. With this, your remote internship should have a component of cultural competency building throughout to help bridge these differences and form a more complete cultural experience.

With a virtual internship at an international organization, you will be able to promote yourself as a person who has worked internationally in cross-cultural settings. More and more, these skills are what employers are looking for as businesses reach across borders.

Not only will you be able to boost your own career, but you will also be supporting local companies that need capacity-building. You will make incredible international connections and can visit the country when you are able, knowing you have friends on the other side of the globe!
