Frazer’s Zimbabwe Experience

Tell us about your experiences with Kaya I have had a very enjoyable experience working on the kaya volunteer project at Bulawayo Rescue Sanctuary. The sign up process and preparation went very smoothly and having just one person to talk to about things throughout this process made things seem a lot friendlier and relaxed.
What were the highlights? Having the opportunity to see and learn about many amazing animals both in the wild and in the sanctuary. In addition to this the helping with the rescue of a Brown Hyena and helping with the release of a Honey Badger and a Genet where thrilling experiences. Outside the sanctuary the safari trips and the visit to Victoria Falls where amazing and brought new and interesting experiences.
What does travelling as a volunteer mean to you vs travelling as a tourist? Traveling as a volunteer means getting involved with a project and doing something for the greater good whilst having the privilege and experience of the local culture and seeing the sights. Whereas traveling as a tourist means that you mostly get to see what you want to do but not leave with the feeling of having done some good and made new friends in the process.
What would you say to others thinking of volunteering? I’d advise them to choose a project which involves something they have a strong interest in. Possibly try and share the traveling with a friend too so you’re not as nervous on your own. Finally don’t worry, you will have a great time learning about new cultures both from the place your visiting and the other volunteers you’re with, you will make plenty of new friends on your travels and bring back many interesting stories to tell about you’re new experiences.
